Dixie Quilt Guild

The Dixie Quilt Guild is one of the largest in Utah and, for a town the size of St. George, remarkable. It was founded in 1983 by a small group of local quilters and now runs to roughly 300 members.

The membership is what makes it unusual. About half are full-time southern Utah residents; the other half are part-time residents and snowbirds who arrive when the weather turns everywhere else. That gives the guild a rhythm most don’t have — the season peaks in winter and spring, and there’s a steady flow of people arriving who know nobody and are looking for exactly this.

Meetings are on the second Saturday of most months, ten until noon, at the Taylor Auditorium in the Taylor Health Sciences Building on East Medical Center Drive. They skip July and August, sensibly.

Beyond the monthly meeting there are seven workshops through the year, two retreats, and a philanthropy group that turns members’ fabric into quilts for local charities. For anyone new to the area, several members describe this as the fastest way to go from knowing nobody to having a circle of friends.
